Introduction In 1988, the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) agreed to set up the IES/IStructE Joint Singapore Structural Division in terms of a Memorandum of Understanding. The 1988 Memorandum of Understanding was entered into in order to promote the development of a closer working relationship to the mutual benefit of the members of both Institutions and to unify and strengthen representation of structural engineers internationally. The committee promotes the structural engineering practices in Singapore by organising seminars and conferences. Most of the IStructE members in Singapore are also members of the IES and members have benefited a great deal from the understanding between the two Institutions.
The IStructE Singapore Division has 25 IStructE fellows, 107 IStructE corporate members, 53 IStructE associates, 1 IStructE associate member, 74 IStructE graduate members and 37 IStructE student members The Joint Committee comprises the Immediate past Chairman and up to twelve Corporate/Chartered Members comprising of:
(a) 4 representatives who are members of IES and IStructE, (b) Up to 4 representatives from IES, who are also members of C&S and may or may not be IStructE members (c) Up to 4 representatives from IStructE who may or may not be IES members. The committee is empowered to co-opt additional members after election of office bearers in order to carry out the number of tasks as directed by the Committee. The Joint IES/IStructE Committee holds office for two calendar years (the official period shall be 1st January to 31st December) or until the assumption of office of its duly appointed successor.
